I think I killed it! And not in a good way either

I've always had a lot of respect for anyone who does beautiful hand work. Now I have even more respect!

I really do think I killed it. . . so much for simply reading the instructions and following along. I was only doing a back stitch and it's such a small table-topper, I really didn't expect to have so many issues from the onset.

Do you see what happened to the thread? Yikes! Clearly I'm not doing something right.

Thanks to my Mom, I have an embroidery machine and digitizing software. I think it will be a lot less of a headache trying to complete this in time for Christmas if I just digitize it and do it on the machine. (I've already digitized half of it.)

But, I'm not giving up! I'm going to figure out how to do this by hand at some point, because I really do think it will look better done by hand. Any tips for me?

PS. I really is a lovely pattern! I ordered it from the Sew Sisters Quilt Shop (based out of Toronto).

You are right. It doesn't look good. I'm no hand stitcher but is your eye big enough and 'they' recommend only short lengths of thread, 12-18 inches. Looks like the thread is shredding with all the movement through the eye. Good luck!

It's an ambitious beginner project with a tight deadline - not a great combination. If your thread is getting worn, perhaps you need a thicker needle to make a bigger hole to 'break trail' for the thread. Make sure you don't use too long a piece of thread too. Think about it getting rubbed by the fabric every time it's pulled through. Try to enjoy the journey.

I love doing hand embroidery. The only thing I can think of is that, as was mentioned above, the thread was too long. Also, perhaps you should also use an embroidery needle.

Embroidery/crewel needles have a long spooned out groove from the eye to the end of the blunt tip of the needle. They is where the embroidery floss that lie down so that the end of the needle is nice & flush. You wont' have that tug & POP through with each stitch then. (geeze I hope this makes sense lol). What kind of floss are you using? I can't see strands...

Don't give up!

I like my stitches better when the ends are side by side a bit. It seems to help hide/camoflauge the imperfect stitches I take. You could try that.

Don't give up!

I have to go with what My Sweet Prairie says, using the RIGHT needle makesall the difference. Get a good quality EMBROIDERY needle and you will quickly see the difference that it makes. Good Luck!

i think you have all the answers you need. but here is my 2pennies worth...
To size the needle to your thread...
Using double thread select needle with large enough eye to easily thread the needle... this will ensure the needle makes a large enough hole for the thread to pass through without getting 'torn'.
i agree with the other friends' advice too.
